Springfield Police Warn Of Telephone Scam

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Police in Springfield are warning area residents about a telephone scam in which the caller tells people answering the phone they can claim a prize if they send $1,500 or more to an out-of-state address.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register (http://bit.ly/1bgsbPT ) reports that the caller tells those who raise questions that the Springfield police have checked things out and that detectives will call them back. Then, a person calls them back claiming to be a lieutenant with the department and tells them that it safe to send the money.

The department says in a release that people should never send anyone money to claim any kind of prize.
