Officials Warn Of Jury Duty Arrest Scam Calls

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Officials are warning the public about a telephone scam where callers tell people they missed jury duty and will be arrested unless they pay hundreds of dollars.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Salt Lake City says callers will identify themselves as federal court clerks. They tell people a warrant will be issued for their arrest unless they put at least $400 on a reloadable debit card and call back with the card’s number.

Court officials say none of the victims had actually been called for jury duty.

U.S. Attorney David Barlow says people who fail to show up for jury duty are contacted by court officials to figure out why they missed it.

They are not fined without a court order and officials do not seek payment over the phone.
