Public warned about Westar Energy phone scam
Kansas City, Missouri – Westar Energy is warning the public about imposters posing as its employees who are trying to get personal information from Kansas City-area customers.
The utility said the scammers claim to work with Westar and tell customers they need to pay a bill or their service will be cut off. The scammers tell the target to use a prepaid card to settle the bill.
Scammers were running a similar operation in Kansas City late last year.
The imposters will provide a toll-free phone number that sounds like Westar Energy’s automated phone system.
The utility said anyone who gets one of these calls should not pay anything and should instead call Westar’s Public Relations line at 800-383-1183.
