Bay City residents targeted in utility phone scam
Bay City, Michigan – Scammers are targeting Bay City residents, demanding they pay their utility bills over the phone or risk having their service shutoff.
City officials have said the city or its electric department would never request or accept payments over the phone. A final shutoff notice is never made over the phone, either.
The scammers, according to a release from the city, are instructing customers to purchase prepaid credit cards and then share that information over the phone.
“If you are ever in doubt about a call you received, hang up, and call us back on the number listed on your utility bill,” according to the release.
Officials have warned about utility phone scams in the past few years. Some have used an app that disguises the incoming number as a Bay City Hall or Consumers Energy phone number on people’s caller IDs.
