Phone Scam Targeting Caernarvon Township Businesses

Police are sounding the alarm about a utility company phone scam that appears to be targeting southern Berks County business owners.

“They’re very good,” Caernavon Township Police Chief John Scalia said.

“They have managers on the phone, they have people that have your account numbers, they know the last payment you made.”

Over the last month, police say three businesses – Billy Burgers and Bakery, Nuse’s Deli, and Joanna General Store – reported being the targets of a phone scam operation. Billy McConnell, owner of Billy Burgers and Bakery, said scammers have called his business four times.

“Usually you get a call right around lunch time,” he said. “They like to call during a time when you are busy.”

Police said the scammers claim to be with PPL Electric and tell the businesses that they need to pay their bills or their electricity will be turned off.

“Naturally as a business owner, you’re concerned because, ‘Oh I didn’t pay my bill,'” McConnell said.

“Because you have a business, so you can’t have anything shut off.”

Police said the scammers usually make odd requests to expedite the payment, including demanding money orders.

“I’ve noticed some people had already asked them to go to the bank, and they’ll stay on the phone all the way to the bank,” Scalia said.

McConnell said this isn’t the first time he’s been the target of a scam and knew something wasn’t right.

“It’s always good to go to the official place and call them, make sure everything is good,” he said.

“At that point I knew that something was wrong.”

Scalia said he’s only aware of businesses being targeted. But if any individuals suspect that they’ve been a target of this phone scam, they are urged to contact authorities straight away.

MidAmerican Energy have recently warned of a phone scam that is known to be targeting their customers in Sioux City & across the entire state of Iowa.

In one day alone, over 40 customers have reported getting a call from someone who claims to work for MidAmerican Energy, stated a press release issued on Tuesday. They threaten to disconnect energy services if payment was not sent.

Reports of this scam have come from Oskaloosa, Des Moines, Fort Dodge & Davenport, along with Sioux City, claims the release.

The press release says the phone scammers usually tell unsuspecting victims that they owe a certain amount of money and if it’s not paid to them immediately, their services will be disconnected. What makes this more worrying is that the scammers phone response system and caller ID mimics that of MidAmerican Energy, to make it look legitimate to the victims.

IRS phone scam warning from Boston police

Boston police are warning residents to be wary of a phone scam involving IRS impersonators.

Police said they received multiple reports Tuesday related to an “aggressive” phone scam that targeted elderly residents. In the incidents, impersonators claimed to work for the IRS and threatened to arrest people for failing to pay taxes, according to police.

These calls have multiple red flags, police said, as the IRS will never demand payment of taxes or ask for credit card information to be disclosed over the phone.

The IRS also does not threaten to arrest those who have unpaid taxes, and would not demand outstanding taxes be settled with a specific payment method, such as a prepaid debit card.

This isn’t the first case of IRS phone scams this year. In January, a Westborough woman gave more than $8,000 to scammers after spending more than five hours on the phone with them.

Police ask that anyone who believes they might be the victim of a phone scam call the police department or the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.

Phone scam warning issued by West Milford representatives

West Milford, New Jersey – From calls regarding alleged computer viruses to those dealing with false Internal Revenue Service (IRS) claims, phone scams are reportedly on the rise in West Milford and throughout New Jersey.

Councilwoman Marilyn Lichtenberg, a senior citizen and the council liaison to the municipal Senior Citizen Advisory Committee, said local seniors have provided her with multiple accounts of calls allegedly originating from the IRS. These calls, she said, claim a problem exists with the potential victim’s taxes.

“And there is another one going around regarding computers,” she said. “They’ll call and say there is a definite virus on your computer and try to get information that way.

“I told seniors that if you get a phone call say, ‘Please, this phone’s not working right. Call my other number, 973-728-2800’ … which is the West Milford Police Department.”

Mayor Bettina Bieri, a certified public accountant, said she has been made aware of the “IRS” phone scam by clients. She said the mere fact that the someone who claims to be from the IRS is calling is enough to raise a red flag.

“No government agency, not the IRS, not the State of New Jersey, will call you and demand money on the spot. They will not threaten jail,” she said. “The very first steps that you will always get will be mailed correspondence. No email, no calls.”

The mayor said getting those calls may be scary. However, she urged potential victims not to panic.

“The bottom line is: Never give out your personal information or anything over the phone or in an email,” Bieri said. “Don’t give them your Social Security number. Don’t give them your date of birth. Don’t give them your credit card number. Nothing. And, certainly, do not send any money.”

Jeff Abramo of AARP New Jersey said the IRS scam is not necessarily new, but it is increasing in frequency across the state as tax season approaches.

“When they answer the phone, residents are told that they will be arrested and prosecuted if they do not pay them immediately,” he said. “The name Dennis Grey is sometimes, but not always, given. The fact is, these calls are not legitimate and are in no way connected to AARP or any government agency. The IRS will not communicate with you by phone.”

Councilman Lou Signorino said he is particularly concerned for seniors, who are regularly targeted by scammers seeking to steal identifies or force potential victims into wiring large sums of money to assist family members or themselves.

“They work so hard to save their money and they need their money to stay afloat, so I certainly don’t want them to be victimized,” Signorino said.

The West Milford Police Department has urged residents to report threatening calls regarding purported back taxes directly to the IRS via irs.gov or 1-800-366-4484.
